As the UK construction industry continues to grow, predicted to hit £404bn revenue in 2024, new data has shown the key trades that are in the shortest supply. 

General builders, electricians, and gas engineers will be the most in-demand tradespeople in the UK, with over 55,000 open vacancies on popular job sites. 

There are over 80,000 job vacancies in construction trades overall, highlighting that the nationwide skills shortage isn’t slowing down.  

The research, conducted by UK metal supplier, metals4U reviewed job listings on Indeed, Totaljobs, and Reed to compare the most in-demand skills in the trades. Builders are by far the most in demand, while electricians and gas engineers also being in short supply for 2024:  

  1. Builders (41,505 vacancies) 
  2. Electricians (9,365 vacancies) 
  3. Gas Engineer (7,393 vacancies) 
  4. Flooring Contractor (6,081 vacancies) 
  5. Carpenter (4,791 vacancies) 
  6. Plumbers (4,585 vacancies) 
  7. Joiner (3,865 vacancies) 
  8. Window Cleaner (3,717 vacancies) 
  9. Painter (2,277 vacancies) 
  10. Roofer (1,618 vacancies) 

The skills shortage is at an all-time high in the trade industry, and this is predicted to continue. A recent industry report revealed that 937,000 new workers will be needed in the construction and trade industries by 2032 to meet the ever-growing demand.
