Which CSCS Card Do I Need? A Guide for UK Construction Workers

If you’re looking for work in UK construction, one of the questions you may be asked is: “What CSCS card do you have?”

But with different cards available for Labourers, Skilled Workers, Apprentices, Supervisors and Managers, knowing which CSCS card you actually need isn’t always straightforward.

At Approach Personnel, we recruit construction workers for projects across the UK. Whether you’re starting your career in construction, moving into a new trade or progressing into supervision or management, having the correct card for your occupation can be essential when looking for your next role.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you understand which CSCS card may be right for you.

What is a CSCS card?

CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme.

CSCS cards provide evidence that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they carry out.

Although holding a CSCS card is not a legal requirement, many contractors and construction sites require workers to hold the appropriate card before allowing them to work on site.

Importantly, there isn't simply one standard "CSCS card" for everyone. The card you need will depend on your occupation, qualifications and level of responsibility.

Which CSCS card should I have?

Labourer Card

If you work as a Labourer carrying out general labouring duties on a construction site, the Labourer Card may be appropriate.

This card is specifically intended for people working in labouring occupations and shouldn't be used as an alternative to a Skilled Worker Card if you're actually carrying out a skilled trade.

For example, if you're working as a qualified Bricklayer, Carpenter or other skilled tradesperson, you should check the card requirements for your occupation rather than simply applying for a Labourer Card.

Apprentice Card

Starting your career through a construction apprenticeship?

The Apprentice Card is designed for people who are registered on a recognised apprenticeship.

It allows apprentices to demonstrate their status while they work towards the qualifications and skills required for their chosen construction occupation.

Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager Card

Construction workers who have experience in technical, supervisory or management positions but are completing an appropriate construction-related qualification may be eligible for an Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager Card.

This is a temporary card designed to support experienced individuals while they work towards the qualification required for their occupation.

Eligibility requirements apply, so candidates should always check the current CSCS criteria before applying.

Skilled Worker Card

If you're a qualified tradesperson, the Skilled Worker Card may be the appropriate route.

This can include occupations across construction where the worker has achieved the relevant construction-related qualification, such as an NVQ or SVQ.

Rather than choosing a card based purely on its colour, it's important to make sure your qualification and occupation match the requirements of the card you're applying for.

Advanced Craft Card

The Advanced Craft Card is intended for workers who have achieved an appropriate advanced construction-related qualification and meet the relevant requirements.

This may apply to experienced tradespeople who have progressed beyond the standard skilled-worker qualification level.

Supervisory Card

If you've progressed into a recognised construction supervisory occupation, you may require a Supervisory Card.

This demonstrates that you hold the appropriate qualification for your supervisory role.

Moving from working within a trade to supervising other workers can change the card requirements that apply to you, so it's worth checking your eligibility when your responsibilities change.

Manager Card

For those working in qualifying construction management occupations, the Manager Card may be appropriate.

This is aimed at individuals who hold the relevant construction management qualification for their occupation.

If you've recently progressed into management, don't automatically assume that the card you previously used remains the correct one for your new position.

What about the CSCS Red Cards?

You may also come across several types of Red CSCS Card.

Red cards are generally temporary cards associated with particular routes into an occupation or while an individual is working towards an appropriate qualification.

The exact card available to you depends on your circumstances, so it's important to check the latest CSCS eligibility requirements rather than assuming that a red card is suitable.

What about CPCS and NPORS?

If you're a Plant Operator, you may be asked for a CPCS or NPORS card rather than a CSCS-branded card.

Depending on the role and site, this could apply to operators of equipment such as:

  • 360 Excavators
  • Telehandlers
  • Forward Tipping Dumpers
  • Rollers
  • Loading Shovels
  • Articulated Dump Trucks

The card and categories required will depend on the machinery you're operating and the requirements of the contractor and site.

Always check exactly what is required before travelling to a new assignment.

Do I need to take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test?

For many CSCS card applications, you will need to have passed the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test.

The test you need can vary according to your occupation and level of responsibility.

However, passing the CITB HS&E Test alone does not necessarily qualify you for a CSCS card. You must also meet the relevant qualification and eligibility requirements for the card you're applying for.

Don't choose a card based on colour alone

One of the most important things for construction workers to understand is that having a CSCS card isn't necessarily the same as having the correct CSCS card.

Your card should accurately reflect your occupation, qualifications and competency.

This is particularly important as the construction industry continues to focus on ensuring workers can demonstrate appropriate competence for the roles they perform.

If your occupation changes or you gain additional qualifications, it may be worth checking whether you should move onto a different card.

Check before accepting your next construction job

Before accepting a new construction assignment, make sure you know exactly what documentation is required.

Check that:

  • Your card is valid and in date.
  • Your card is appropriate for the work you'll be carrying out.
  • You hold the correct qualifications for the role.
  • Any additional tickets or certifications required by the site are valid.
  • Your plant categories are correct where applicable.
  • You meet any additional site-specific requirements.

Doing this before your start date can help avoid delays or the frustration of arriving at site and discovering that you don't have the documentation required to start work.
